Military personnel have taken over security in parts of Delta State after rampaging bandits gunned down no fewer than five policemen in 48 hours.
More worrisome was the report that the service rifles of the slain policemen were carted away by the hoodlums, thereby raising concerns that the criminals are planning fresh onslaughts.
“The gunmen opened fire on the police team around Eku, (near Warri), killing one policeman on the spot and fatally wounding others. The wounded cops fled into the bush,” a source said.
Our reporter also learnt that a policeman attached to a former local government council chairman was killed in the state hours earlier.
Police spokesman Famous Ajieh, said he heard reports of the incident.
He said: “I heard something like that but the report is not very clear because there are several versions of the incidents. Hopefully, details will be clearer tomorrow.”
The Nation investigation however revealed that members of the armed forces – Nigerian Airforce, Navy and Army – took over security duty on major highways yesterday.
The combat-ready troops were sighted on the Eku-Abraka axis of Warri-Agbor highway, where hoodlums opened fire on a team of policemen.
The development is on the heels of the killing of an armed security aide to a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu.
The cop, simply identified as Stanley, was gunned down when the hoodlums opened fire on Elumelu’s convoy shortly after he left the Osubi Airport.
Consequently, it was gathered that the governor called in the armed forces.
“The governor consulted some security chiefs and decided that soldiers, complemented by naval men and men of the 61 Nigerian Airforce, joined in flushing out the hoodlums,” a source revealed.
One of the stern-looking military man on duty in the area said their deployment was inevitable.
