Nigeria's Kano Luxury Bus Park Massacre: Government Of Kano State Is An Accomplice And Should Be Dragged Before The ICC For Investigation

(Onitsha-Nigeria, 31st day of March, 2013)-The divide and rule tactics applied by the Government of Kano State, Northwest Nigeria over the 18th day of March, 2013 deadly bomb blasts that killed up to 200 people, if not more, and injured hundreds of others, mostly Nigerian citizens of Igbo extraction, at the New Road Luxury Bus Terminal in Sabon Gari city of the State is unreservedly condemned by the leadership of International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law. This has also exposed the State as an accomplice in the dastardly act, which amounts to pogrom. The said State Government risks being made to answer for crimes against humanity before the ICC, at The Hague, the Netherlands. It is recalled that the multiple deadly bomb blasts occurred at about 4:00pm on 18th day of March, 2013; minutes after an unmarked Volkswagen Golf car drove into the Park and parked in between two fully loaded luxury buses belonging to Gobison Nigerian Limited. The car was loaded with undetected improvised explosive devices, which were detonated minutes later. Beside the two luxury buses were three other scantly loaded luxury buses belonging to Ezenwata and Chiemezie Motors Limited respectively. The modern luxury buses, which contained 59 properly seated passengers each, excluding attachments, were Southwest, Southeast and South-south bound buses. The five buses were burnt beyond recognition. The Park, which is located at the heart of the Igbo controlled area of Kano State, called Sabon Gari, also had at the time of the deadly bomb attacks, other passengers, both those embarking on, and disembarking from journeys, as well as hawkers, park workers and passerby.

The advent of Boko-Haram and lately Ansaru Islamist terror brigades as well as the controversial introduction of Sharia Islamic law in the northern parts of Nigeria some 12 years ago have deepened social divisions between the host Hausa-Fulani Muslim population and the non-native Christian population residents in the State, dominated by the Igbos of the Southeast Nigeria. The Igbo race is the strongest hold of the Nigerian Christian population and has consistently been a target of ethno-religious killings in the past 50 years. As per the entrenched social divisions, only few moderate and educated host Hausa-Fulanis patronize private transport companies in the northern parts of the country including Kano State, controlled by the Igbo transporters. The uneducated adult Hausa-Fulanis of the north and their leading politicians despise Igbos with reckless abandon, especially in the area of alcohol consumption and other social lifestyles (other than women and polygamy), which they see as ungodly. Among this class; sitting in the same bus, eating, drinking and shaking hands with Igbos amounts to contamination and unrighteousness. As a result of these and more, social divisions between the Muslim and the Christian populations in the northern Nigeria including Kano State are deepened. Kano State plays host to the largest Igbo population in northern Nigeria with over 3million Igbo residents; most of them settled in Sabon Gari city of the State.

Following the deadly bomb blasts, clearly targeted at the Igbo population by violent Islamist brigades, backed by leading northern politicians, the Kano State Police Command led by one Musa Daura, acting in conjunction with the Government of Kano State, released a public statement shortly after the carnage, claiming that only 22 persons died and 65 injured. Few days later, the Government of Kano State led by one Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, released another statement, claiming that 24 persons died and that more Hausas died than the Igbos. The two official statements were far below the casualty figures given by the media and other credible independent sources including the Kano State leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and eyewitnesses, which ranged between 70 and 170 or more. In an obvious bid to justify the despicable act and stick to its deceitful and mangled figures, which received wide condemnations from many Nigerians, the Government of Kano State remorselessly embarked, reportedly, on divide and rule tactics. On March 29, 2013, the duo of one Boniface Ibekwe and one Chi Nworgu reportedly got a brief from the Government of Kano State to engage in act of betrayal against their fellow Igbos especially those that lost their dear lives in the deadly bomb blasts. The duo, as reportedly directed, issued a statement, reportedly prepared for them, claiming that Igbos were not the target of the bombing and that only 37 died and 75 injured and that the dead and the injured cut across other ethnic groups. The duo, as reportedly directed, said they spoke on behalf of all Igbo residents in Kano State.

The perceived procured statement was quickly succeeded by another issued on Saturday, 30TH day of March, 2013, by the Kano State leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Chief Tobias Michael Idika. The statement not only condemned the act of betrayal of the duo of one Boniface Ibekwe and one Chi Nworgu, but also gave graphic steps so far taken by his leadership following the deadly attacks particularly as it concerns the identities and numbers of the dead and the injured. The Kano State Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadershipalso condemned the despicable roles of the Government of Kano State especially its efforts to suppress the casualty figures and create divisions among the Igbo population in Kano State. The leadership, which on the heels of the deadly bombings, said it counted over 70 dead bodies, informed that as at 29thday of March, 2013, 53 names of dead Igbo sons and daughters were received and recorded in its register with over 60 injured, and that many Igbo families in Kano State have declared their relatives missing, while many other dead bodies were yet to be identified by their families, relatives and friends as at the said date owing to problem of proper identification. Also, according to the leadership, not all the injured were treated in the public clinics; some treated themselves quietly and left, while others went or were admitted in private clinics for treatments.

It is utterly despicable and condemnable that what the Government of Kano State could offer as corporate sympathy for the Igbo residents in its State for the loss of their loved ones is reportedly the application of divide and rule tactics and criminal suppression of the casualty figures. Just the other day, it was the leadership of MASSOB led by Chief Raphael Uwazuruike that reportedly probated and reprobated over this same sensitive issue. The factors that necessitated the reported strange and sudden reprobation were said to have been traced to the Aso Rock Seat of Power in Abuja, Nigeria.

Let those sponsoring these divide and rule tactics among the Igbos be firmly reminded that the retaliations against these killings by the Igbos, if continued unchecked, will be expected from surprised Igbo quarters and not from those angles being compromised and influenced. As a core Igbo oriented civil rights group that is grassroots oriented, we are aware of burning concerns of teeming young Igbo graduate-scientists and non-graduate scientists as well as others resident locally and internationally over these Igbo killings, which explains why we consistently task the Federal Government of Nigeria to find acceptable solutions to the problem and cease the systematic ethnic cleansing against the law abiding Igbo race in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the only solution available to the Government of Kano State and the Federal Government of Nigeria is the creation of imaginary divisions among the Igbos using some leprous individuals who bear Igbo names, whom many Igbos have described as Judases of our times.

For those Judases so called, they should be reminded that bombings and terror killings are like stones thrown inside a densely populated market; anybody can be a victim. Today, they are said to have collected bribes to erase the names and numbers of their brothers and sisters who were massacred by their host enemies; tomorrow, it may most likely be their turn. Also, those Judases so called, can be victims of clean-up killing or perfect crime, which, criminologically, is one of the government or political crimes. This is because anybody who is privy to an enclosure where heinous State crimes are discussed is an express candidate of political elimination or killing.

While commending, unreservedly, the courageous attitude of the Kano State Branch of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo for a good job it has done, we wish to restate our earlier warning that pushing the Igbos to the wall will be very catastrophic and unquenchable. Again, if the Igbo race is pushed to the wall, production of improvised explosive devices and their detonating appliances will be a toyish aspect of what the Race will be capable of inventing and producing. Any further killings of Igbos and other innocent Nigerians, on the strength of these thoughtless divide and rule tacticswill be very calamitous. It remains our immutable position that solutions to these senseless killings must be found by the Federal Government of Nigeria as a matter of extreme urgency and immediacy.

The solutions to the systematic massacre of Igbos and other innocent Nigerians by malicious and blood thirsty Nigerians are not far-fetched. They include overhauling by presidential proclamation, of the grossly lopsided command structure of the Nigeria Police Force with respect to rankings, promotions and postings so as to engender geopolitical equity; digitalization of the NPF(including computer literacy) especially its criminal intelligence and criminal investigation; advancement of local and international in-service trainings of the personnel of the criminal intelligence and investigation units of the NPF; upgrading and digitalization of all State CIDs of the NPF including their forensic/crime labs; mass retirement of all serving CPs, AIGs and DIGs from 55 years and above; non-renewal of the tenure of retired DIG Parry Osayande, chairman, Nigeria Police Service Commission and appointment of a non-retired police officer as his replacement come May, 2013; curbing proliferation of small arms and their illicit bearers, which may have reached an all time high of 5.7million in the country; high reliance on preventive policing and less reliance on gun-culture policing; advancement of early warning and hazard preventive measures rather than medicine after death methodologies; equitable implementation of police-citizen protection ratio to all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion, age and sex; upgrading and professionalization of the country's criminal justice system including criminal intelligence and investigation managements, criminal prosecutions and criminal trials; and arrest and prosecution of northern politicians, royal fathers and retired and serving top security personnel found backing the violent religious extremists perpetrating these crimes against humanity or where the Government of the Federation is incapable of ensuring this; express invitation of the Chief Prosecutor/Investigator for the International Criminal Court for investigation, arrest and prosecution of those involved, which may include the Government of Kano State, before the ICC at the Hague.

GOV OBI SPEND EASTER IN HOSPITALS.

As part of Easter celebration, Gov. Obi visited many hospitals in the State, where he interacted with the sick ones, settled the Bills of indigent ones, discharged long ago, but could not pay the bills.

At one of the hospitals, Holy Rosary Hospital, Waterside, Onitsha, the Governor paid the bill of 10 poor ones that had been discharged but could not pay the bills as well as 15 women that were delivered of new born babies.

Obi said that beyond Easter celebration that the gesture was a way of identifying with the people and letting them know that the Governor felt for them at all times. He said that part of the feeling for the people informed his efforts to improve the healthcare delivery in the State to serve the people of the State better.

Further, he said the collaboration with the Church was informed by the fact that they treated the people of the State and that their charges were affordable as they were more of charity organizations.

One of those that benefitted from the Governor's gesture, Sergeant Kevin Osai extolled the Governor for his commitment to the promotion of the welfare of the people. He said that under Obi, the people of the State, for the first time, have come to witness what real governance was.

Speaking, the Hospital Administrator, Rev Fr. Stanley Ozigbo thanked the Governor for allowing himself to be used by God to renew the face of Anambra State.

Why we make s*x look real in our movies in Ghana-Yvonne Okoro

Click for Full Image SizeYvonne Okoro Talks About S*x…The Contract Bags Six Nominations

This is what Nigeria/Ghana actress, Yvonne Okoro, said when she was asked to defend Ghollywood on n*dity and s*x in their movies, "I think sometimes when you are acting, you feel like doing something that you want to be remembered for. Maybe in the course you overdo it. It depends on the script. I think in Ghana we wanted to start something, like a Trans-setter.

Our culture does not allow topics like s*x and n*dity but in a way sometimes I think we are also being hypocritical. A Hollywood movie will come, we will watch it and be happy and compliment them.

I think if you are going to do n*dity, you should not do it in a tacky way. It should be done with what will conform to our culture. I think it is about choice, if you think you want to remove yourself and think it will help your character and you don't have a problem with it, it is fine."

The actress whose maiden effort, the Contract movie, has bagged six nominations is already happy about the new development and she is doing everything possible to hit the location soon for another fantastic movie.

Second US prosecutor and wife murdered.

A TEXAS district attorney and his wife have been found dead in their home - the second murder of a US prosecutor in the same office in less than two months, sparking fears of a larger plot. In January, Kaufman County assistant district attorney Mark Hasse, 57, reportedly investigating the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood, was gunned down just outside a courthouse in a small Texan town.
On Saturday, the county's district attorney, Mike McLelland, and his wife, Cynthia Woodward McLelland, were found shot dead at their home.
"It is a shock," Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh told the Dallas Morning News.
"It was a shock with Mark Hasse, and now you can just imagine the double shock," he said.
"Until we know what happened, I really can't confirm that it's related, but you always have to assume until it's proven otherwise."
The newspaper reported that authorities were providing security at the homes of others who feared they could also be targeted.
A statewide bulletin in December said the Aryan Brotherhood - an organised crime syndicate - was "actively planning retaliation against law enforcement officials", the paper said.
Authorities are also probing whether Hasse's shooting was linked to the killing of a Colorado prison chief on March 19.
The suspect in that shooting is Evan Spencer Ebel, 28, a white supremacist with a criminal history spanning a decade, who was shot and killed after a standoff with sheriff's deputies.
However, authorities have not found evidence tying Ebel to Hasse's murder, the Dallas paper said.

US crash kills five family members.

FIVE members of a southern California family have been killed in southern Nevada after their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities say.
The dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two - the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy - were hospitalised in a critical condition.
Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.
The crash happened in the early hours of Saturday on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano's four-wheel drive struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 130km northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.
A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano's 4WD was treated at the hospital and released.
Beer bottles were found in the 4WD, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won't be known for a couple of weeks, he said.
Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seatbelts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.
"Unfortunately, so many in the van weren't wearing seatbelts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them," Hixson said. "We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seatbelt on."
The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.

Taylor Swift 'desperate' to meet Prince Harry.

Taylor Swift in ConcertTAYLOR Swift has a thing for British red heads and apparently Prince Harry is no exception. Swift, who currently dates English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, is keen to be included on guest lists for the Prince’s royal state visit to the US next month, according to British newspaper The Sun.
A source said: "Taylor’s desperate to get her name added on to the VIP lists of stars being lined up to meet Harry. She loves everything about him - especially his ginger hair and English accent"
Swift has previously dated actors Jake Gylllenhall and Taylor Lautner, plus One Direction singer Harry Styles and John F Kennedy descendent, Conor Kennedy.
Prince Harry is thought to have a ‘type’ - blondes - and perhaps Swift does, too. Sheeran has told how he was mistaken for the prince by Harry’s own cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, while performing at a wedding in the Caribbean.
The prince already has meetings lined up with other US celebrities, including Vanessa Hudgens, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence at parties in Washington and New York.
Swift will be taking her 'Red' tour to Washington in May, with Sheeran as her support act. They also sing together in the show.

15 dead in Nigerian Easter military raid.

SOLDIERS have raided a suspected hideout for Islamist extremist group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria's largest city of Kano, sparking a clash that left 15 people dead, the military says.
The military claimed those killed included 14 Islamists and one soldier, while alleging the extremists were planning an Easter day attack in the city.
Residents reported hearing gunfire and explosions early on Sunday as soldiers battled the Islamists.
"In the raid, 14 terrorists were killed and their commander was arrested," Army Brigadier-General Ilyasu Abba told reporters.
"We lost one soldier in the encounter and one other was badly injured."
There was however no independent confirmation of those details. Casualty information from Nigeria's military has often been unreliable, with the army under pressure to show progress in the fight against Boko Haram.
The military claimed to have recovered weapons, including a car loaded with explosives, which Abba said was "primed for attack against Easter here in Kano".
The hideout, which comprised two attached flats, was destroyed by a bulldozer on the orders of Abba, as with previous hideouts.
Nigeria has in the past seen major attacks on Christian holidays blamed on Boko Haram.
A bombing in the northern city of Kaduna on Easter last year killed 41 people.
Violence linked to Boko Haram's insurgency has left some 3000 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces.
The group's deadliest attack yet occurred in Kano in January 2012, when co-ordinated bombings and shootings killed at least 185 people.

Nigerian troops 'kill 14 Boko Haram militants' in Kano

Nigerian troops say they have killed 14 suspected members of the Islamist rebel group Boko Haram, in a raid on a building in the northern city of Kano.
A soldier was killed in the raid, and a potential suicide bomber was arrested in a car laden with explosives, a military spokesman said.
Security has increased amid fears for the safety of Christians over Easter.
Hundreds of people have been killed since Boko Haram fighters stepped up their campaign in recent years.
The military said the group had been planning an Easter Sunday attack in the city.
"This operation was conducted following a tip-off from our intelligence," military spokesman Iliyasu Abbah said, quoted by Reuters news agency.
Residents reported gunfire and explosions early on Sunday, but there has been no independent confirmation of the casualties.
Kano has seen a series of attacks blamed on Boko Haram, including a suicide bombing on 19 March - apparently aimed at Christians - which left more than 20 people dead.
The group's deadliest attack so far occurred in the city in January 2012, when a series of bombings and shootings killed at least 185 people.
Boko Haram says its members are fighting to create an Islamic state in Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north.
The group has been blamed for the deaths of some 1,400 people in central and northern Nigeria since 2010.
It is believed also to have a presence in Cameroon, Niger and Chad.
Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer. It is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south.Map

Timbuktu clashes between Mali army and Islamists .

Malian soldiers enter the historic city of Timbuktu in January 2013, previously occupied for 10 months by Islamists
The Malian army has been fighting Islamist rebels in the northern city of Timbuktu after a suicide bomber attempted to attack an army checkpoint.
The bomber was killed before he could detonate his bomb on Saturday evening. This was followed by militant attempts to infiltrate the city.
The army, backed by French air power, then moved against the Islamists.
Earlier this year French troops pushed Islamists out of much of northern Mali but sporadic fighting has continued.
"The fighting is heavy and it is ongoing," Malian army Capt Modibo Naman Traore told the Reuters news agency, adding that the army was in the process of "encircling" the militants.
At least one Malian soldier and two civilians were wounded in Saturday's fighting according to the city's mayor.
But the number of casualties following Sunday's fighting remains unknown.
The situation in Timbuktu remains tense, reports the BBC's Thomas Fessy from Bamako.
The people of Timbuktu had barricaded themselves in their homes after a group of Islamists infiltrated a western neighbourhood of the city overnight, our correspondent says.
The French left the Malian army on the front line for hours before they intervened and finished the job, he adds.
Several residents reported a French jet firing on rebel positions.
Another militant attack on the northern town of Gao was repelled on Monday.
Desert fighting Islamist rebels seized much of northern Mali a year ago after a military coup in the capital Bamako.
France intervened militarily in January amid fears that the militants were preparing to advance on Bamako. It currently has about 4,000 troops in Mali.
Since the intervention began, major cities including Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu have been recaptured but fighting is still continuing in desert mountains.
Mali's army and troops from several African countries, including 2,000 from Chad, have also been involved in the fighting.
France plans to withdraw its troops from Mali next month, with West African countries expected to take over in the run-up to elections due in July.

China bird flu: Two men die in Shanghai.

Two men have died in the Chinese city of Shanghai, after contracting a strain of bird flu not previously known in humans, Chinese officials say.
The men, aged 27 and 87, both fell ill with the H7N9 strain in February and died some weeks later in March, Xinhua news agency reported.
A woman of 35 who caught the virus elsewhere is said to be critically ill.
It is unclear how the strain spread, but the three did not infect each other or any close contacts, officials say.
While both men who died were in Shanghai, the third victim was reported in Chuzhou in the eastern province of Anhui.
According to China's National Health and Family Planning Commission, all three became ill with coughs and fevers before developing pneumonia.
Commission experts said on Saturday the cause had been identified as H7N9, a strain of avian flu not thought to have been transmitted to humans before.
There is no vaccine against the strain, the commission said, adding it was currently testing to assess its ability to infect humans.
Another strain of bird flu, H5N1, has led to more than 360 confirmed human deaths since 2003 and the deaths of tens of millions of birds.
The World Health Organization says that most avian flu viruses do not infect humans and the majority of H5N1 cases have been associated with contact with infected poultry.

Deadly floods hit Mauritius capital Port Louis.

Wrecked cars in Port Louis - 30 March
At least 11 people have died after sudden rains caused flooding in the Mauritian capital Port Louis on Saturday, officials have said.
At least eight of the victims were caught in underground areas as the flood waters rose rapidly. Another died of a heart attack.
The island's metereologists said 152mm (6in) of rain fell in less than an hour, 70mm less than the March average.
Prime Minister Navin Rangoolam declared 1 April a day of mourning.
Speaking on national radio, he said Mauritius was suffering badly from the effects of climate change.
Mauritius map
The floods caused chaos in the city, with a huge traffic jam paralysing its centre, L'Express de Maurice newspaper reported.
A BBC reporter in the city says the bodies of six people were recovered from a pedestrian subway and another two from an underground car park.
Resident Ameeksha Dichand told the BBC she had been unable to go outside because it was raining so heavily, though people did venture out on Sunday to inspect the damage.
"The roads are blocked and there is mud everywhere. Trees have fallen all over the place," she said.
"If people couldn't rely on their neighbours so much to help them, then we would have lost more lives. I am so angry at the authorities."
More rain was expected on Sunday, and people were advised to stay at home.

Ex-Beatles gig venue destroyed in Kings Heath fire.

The fire at the shop earlier
A building which hosted British music legends such as The Beatles and The Who in their 1960s heyday has partially collapsed after a fire.
Part of Kings Heath High Street in the Birmingham suburb was closed for hours after the fire at the building, which is now a Cash Converters store.
The building in York Road was formerly the Ritz Ballroom, which also hosted The Rolling Stones in the 1960s.
Officers said they were treating the fire as suspicious. No-one was hurt.
The road, one of the main routes into Birmingham, was closed for several hours between Poplar Road and Silver Street, but has now reopened.
The blaze started at about 05:00 GMT and, at its height, up to 40 firefighters were called to tackle the flames. Fire officers remain at the site.

Structural engineers will now examine the remains of the building to decide how stable it is, but about 70% of it has collapsed.
Music historian Jez Collins, who runs the online Birmingham Music Archive, said it was "very sad" to lose the building.
Stones anniversary "In Birmingham we've lost so much of our musical history," he said.
"If you compare it to other cities like Liverpool and Manchester, which have really made something of their famous venues, we've lost a lot.
"It's the memories that are attached them them - people remember going to the Ritz to see The Beatles, The Stones, The Animals, Pink Floyd and all the big names of the time.
"People met their husbands and wives there and now that building's gone."
The venue shut in the 1970s and the building has been occupied by various shops since.
Celebrations had been planned for September in Kings Heath to mark the 50th anniversary in September of the Rolling Stones playing at the venue.
A Kings Heath Walk of Fame, honouring the area's musical and comedy heritage, had also been planned to start outside the building with a star marking singer Toyah Wilcox.
Local 'landmark' Dave Janes, from the fire service, said the collapse of the building was likely to hamper the investigation into how the fire started.
The front of the shop in York Road Most of the building has now collapsed, the fire service said
Businesses in York Road are shut but those on the High Street were open as normal.
Kate Smart, Kings Heath town centre manager, said some of the surrounding buildings had been damaged by smoke.
She added the area was a "close-knit community" and that they were "devastated" to lose such a "landmark property".

Egypt satirist Bassem Youssef released on bail.

Egyptian satirist and television host Bassem Youssef is surrounded by his supporters upon his arrival at the public prosecutor's office in the high court in Cairo
The popular Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef has been released on bail, after questioning by prosecutors over allegations he insulted Islam and President Mohammed Morsi.
He was ordered to pay 15,000 Egyptian pounds ($2,190; £1,440).
Mr Youssef had spent five hours at the public prosecutor's office, a day after a warrant was issued for his arrest.
He has faced several complaints over his show El Bernameg (The Programme), which satirises many public figures.
On his Twitter feed, Mr Youssef said the bail conditions were related to three lawsuits, while a fourth was still being investigated.
The case has highlighted worries about press freedoms in Egypt.
At one point during his arrival at the prosecutor's office Mr Youssef donned an oversized academic hat, mocking one which Mr Morsi wore recently when he received an honorary doctorate in Pakistan.
In a statement sent out on his Twitter account as he arrived, he said that lawyers and policemen at the office wanted their picture taken with him, and joked that this was perhaps the real reason for his summons.
However, the al-Misri al-Yawm news portal reported that the judge asked him to remove this and other tweets written during the questioning.
'Super Morsi' Bassem Youssef is a doctor who shot to fame after winning a large number of followers with his witty lampooning of public figures in amateur videos posted on the internet following the uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak's rule in February 2011.
He became a household name when his satirical show - likened to Jon Stewart's The Daily Show in the US - began to be broadcast three times a week on one of Egypt's independent satellite stations.
But sketches in which he portrayed Mr Morsi as a pharaoh, calling him "Super Morsi" for holding on to executive and legislative powers, and, separately, putting the president's image on a pillow and parodying his speeches angered one Islamist lawyer, whose formal complaint resulted in the investigation.
As well as insulting Mr Morsi and Islam, Mr Youssef is also accused of "spreading false news with the aim of disrupting public order".
Mr Youssef's case is also seen as the latest in a string of prosecution actions against opponents of the president and the movement that supports him, the Muslim Brotherhood.
Earlier this week, Egypt's top prosecutor ordered the arrest of five political activists, among them a leading blogger, on suspicion of inciting aggression against the Brotherhood.
Many journalists have criticised the Islamist-backed constitution which came into force earlier this year, arguing it does not offer enough guarantees for a free media.
The constitution also sparked protests from opponents who say it favours Islamists and does not sufficiently protect the rights of women or Christians.

Nollywood actor Zack Orji back to acting

Zack Orji
The veteran actor seems to be making a comeback to Nollywood after going on hiatus for many years. Just last week, the True Confession actor was spotted at an event organized by amiable event manager Tayo Paks in VI. At the event, the calm actor displayed a deep and overwhelming knowledge of the French luxury drink, Cognac. He spent almost an hour lecturing the crowd.
Now a few days ago, he was seen at the location of a big budget movie being shot in both Ajah and on the high sea. The film, which is about sea pirates, also features Keppy Ekpeyong and Ibinabo Fiberesima.

Egypt satirist Bassem Youssef faces arrest warrant.

Bassem Youssef became popular after posting satirical videos on the internet

An arrest warrant has been issued for a popular Egyptian political satirist for allegedly insulting Islam and President Mohammed Morsi.
Bassem Youssef has faced several complaints over his show El Bernameg (The Programme).
He has poked fun at a wide range of figures, from fellow television presenters to well-known Muslim scholars and recently Mr Morsi himself.
The case has highlighted worries about press freedoms in Egypt.
It is also seen as the latest in a string of prosecution actions against opponents of the president and his party, the Muslim Brotherhood.
Earlier this week, Egypt's top prosecutor ordered the arrest of five political activists, among them a leading blogger, on suspicion of inciting aggression against the Brotherhood.
The prosecutor, Talat Ibrahim, was appointed late last year by the president, after he had sacked his predecessor, Abdel Maguid Mahmoud.
However, a court this week ordered Mr Mahmoud's reinstatement, a decision that Mr Ibrahim said on Saturday he would fight.
Witty lampooning Many journalists have criticised the Islamist-backed constitution which came into force earlier this year, arguing it does not offer enough guarantees for a free media.

Talat Ibrahim said on Saturday he would challenge a court order reinstating his predecessor
The constitution also sparked protests from opponents who say it favours Islamists and does not sufficiently protect the rights of women or Christians.
Bassem Youssef is a doctor who shot to fame after winning a large number of followers with his witty lampooning of public figures in amateur videos posted on the internet following the uprising that ended Hosni Mubarak's rule in February 2011.
In a statement posted on Mr Youssef's Twitter account on Saturday he confirmed the warrant, adding: "I will go to the public prosecutor's office on Sunday - unless they send me a police car and save me [the bother of] getting there on public transport."

South Africa helicopter crash kills five in Kruger park.

Map

Five members of the South African military have died in a helicopter crash, officials said.
The aircraft was patrolling the Kruger National Park on Saturday evening looking for rhino poachers.
The patrol was routine and an investigation is under way.
The poaching of rhinos is rampant in South Africa. Their horns are sold in Asia, where some believe they have medicinal purposes, although there is no evidence to support it.
The South African Broadcasting Corporation quoted Brig Gen Xolani Mabanga as saying that the Agusta A1-0-9 light utility helicopter had come down at around 19:00 GMT on Saturday, killing all five people on board.
Gen Mabanga said the ministry of defence extended condolences to the families of the deceased, all members of the South African National Defence Force.

Chris Brown Telling Drake To 'Come Out The Closet' On 'R.I.P.' Remix!

 Chris Brown

'If you started from the bottom, go on and come out the closet,' Breezy raps on Young Jeezy remix, seemingly referencing Drizzy's new single.

If you thought Chris Brown and Drake were getting any closer to deading their feud, think again. Breezy took the opportunity to throw a shot to his musical nemesis when he appeared on the remix of Young Jeezy's "R.I.P." single, which dropped Friday (March 29) on Drama LikeTheDJ.com.

"Dearly departed, I bought a plane I departed/ And if you started from the bottom, go on and come out the closet," Chris rhymes on the song's final verse, making a clear reference to Drake and his "Started from the Bottom" single.
The two made major headlines last June after a now-infamous bottle-throwing brawl in a New York City nightclub, which reportedly involved both men and members of their respective entourages. While the feud has quietly carried on, there has been a subliminal war of words brewing.
After the club incident, Brown addressed the beef in an unofficial remix of Chief Keef's "I Don't Like" single. "They throwing bottles, I'm throwing models," he rapped before delivering "OVO you overdose/ Screaming YOLO, no I live twice."
Many believe Drake took a swipe with his verse from Aaliyah's posthumous single "Enough Said" last August. "Running through the city with n---as I'd give a kidney/ Selling under 150, you n---as gotta be kidding," Drizzy rapped, leading many to believe he was insulting Brown, who sold 135,000 copies of his Fortune album when it was released in July 2012.
The feud is believed to be over Brown's on-again, off-again girlfriend Rihanna, who is also said to have been romantically involved with Drake as well. Earlier this month, Drake seemingly took another light jab on his fiery "5AM in Toronto." "Sinatra style I'm just being frank with ya/ I mean, where you think she's at where when she ain't with ya," he spit, leaving many to speculate that the spat between the two inspired the line.
Brown wasn't the only one getting things off of his chest on the "R.I.P." remix either: Jeezy also expressed his distaste with MTV's "Hottest MCs in the Game VIII" list and the fact that he wasn't included. "Trap star bitch spell it with a big 'T'/ Give a damn if I never be a hot MC," he rapped.
Do you believe that Chris Brown was dissing Drake on Young Jeezy's "R.I.P." remix? Let us know in the comments!

Ryan Gosling Reveals Director's 'Place Beyond The Pines' Challenge

Director Derek Cianfrance felt inspired by police show 'COPS' and challenged himself to its one-shot takes, the actor tells MTV News.

Gosling plays Luke, a stunt bike driver-turned-bank robber, and one of the biggest action scenes in the film is a continuous take that ends with Luke zooming around a cage on his bike. Gosling said director Derek Cianfrance had some interesting inspiration for the sequence and the rest of the film.
Ryan Gosling Is 'Proud' To Be Part Of 'The Place Beyond The Pines'
"It was a real challenge for Derek, you know, multiple timeframes, so many more actors tackling action in a unique way," he said. "A big reference for him was 'COPS,' and so everything, all the action had to play out in one take. Just took a lot of planning."
Cianfrance once directed Gosling in another ambitious, time-spanning film, 2010's "Blue Valentine," which took a look at the long, slow undoing of a once-perfect relationship.
With their filming history, the director and actor became friends, Gosling said, adding praise for his movie-making pal.
"['The Place Beyond The Pines'] was just a very ambitious film on his part, and I was just proud to be his friend and to be a part of it," Gosling added.
The film hits theaters this weekend.

Will Lil Wayne Really Retire After Tha Carter V?

'I kind of don't think that after Tha Carter V we'll never hear from Wayne again,' one industry expert tells MTV News.

With I Am Not a Human Being II, Lil Wayne has officially logged in his 10th solo LP. Combine that with his staggering number of mixtapes and group albums, and it's pretty clear that Weezy has racked up a lot of rap mileage.
That, in part, is the reason Wayne told MTV News that after he drops Tha Carter V, he will retire — but do you believe him?
Lil Wayne's 'The Carter' Vs. 'Human Being': The Industry Weighs In
"When you are at that level as a prolific rapper, there's a demand. It's going to be very hard to just chill in your mansion and never poke your head out," Tracy G., co-host of Shade 45's "Sway in the Morning" radio show, told MTV News when we gathered a team of industry insiders to talk all things Wayne earlier this week.
Now Weezy never said that Tha Carter V would be his next album, but judging from his tone during a November interview with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway, it was clear that Tunechi was preparing to sing his swan song sooner than later. "Carter V is my last album," he said at the time. "Man, I've been rappin' since I was 8 years old. I'm 30 now, man. That's a long time, man."
The problem is, no one is buying it. "Rappers don't retire. I've seen this movie before. Jay-Z actually made a movie about it," RapRadar.com content director Brian "B.Dot" Miller said, referencing Jay's 2004 film "Fade to Black."
Producer DVLP, who has been working with Wayne since he dropped Tha Carter II, said he's never seen anyone work as hard as Weezy and he believes it will be hard for the MC to break out of his musical routine.
XXL Editor in Chief Vanessa Satten, who has been covering Weezy since his Hot Boys days, also doesn't buy the retirement talk. "Everybody kind of comes back. If you spit one verse after you retire, does that mean you're back?" she questioned. "I kind of don't think that after Tha Carter V we'll never hear from Wayne again."
So what about Carter V? While I Am Not a Human Being II plays out like a lyrical slugfest, Tunechi puts a different type of energy into his Carter album series, something with more depth. "To me — and I can totally be wrong — Tha Carter is kind of like the main solo artist series, and the Human Being is kind of more of a one-off to keep you kinda busy between the Carter projects," Satten said.
DVLP has produced tracks on both series of albums, and he sees a clear and distinct difference. While Tha Carter is more concentrated, I Am Not a Human Being is just Weezy being carefree. Like he says, "I ain't got no worries." "I think I can be more weird on the I Am Not a Human Being series," DVLP said in terms of the beats he serves up to Wayne for IANAHB. "I think that's just pushing it a little bit more, like his favorite tracks that he just spits on, goes crazy, might not have a hook. It's just expression."

Lil Wayne Reveals: 'I'm An Epileptic'.

'I could've died soon,' Weezy tells L.A. radio station, clearing up rumors about his health and weighing in on 2013 'Hottest MCs.'

There's been a ton of questions surrounding Lil Wayne's health lately, and on Thursday, the larger-than-life rap icon put the speculation to rest when he revealed that he suffers from epilepsy.                                                                                                                                              Weezy called into Power 106 in Los Angeles on Thursday and spoke with DJ Felli Fel about a host of topics, including his most recent hospitalization on March 12. Initially, reports stated that the star MC was being prepared for his last rites and had to have his stomach pumped multiple times due to high amounts of codeine in his system. It was suggested that Wayne's seizures were a result of a syrup addiction, but Wayne finally told his side of the story.
"The thing is, man, the bad news is, I'm an epileptic, so I'm prone to seizures," he said. "This isn't my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh seizure. I've had a bunch of seizures; y'all just never hear about it. This time it got real bad because I got three of 'em in a row, and on the third one, my heart rate went down to, like, 30 percent. Basically, I could've died soon. That's why it was so serious.
"The reason being for the seizures is just plain stress, no rest and overworking myself. That's typical me, though," he continued.
Wayne didn't exactly deny the "last rites" reports that originated from TMZ but suggested that the popular site was lying. Still, he says he holds no ill will. "I can't be upset at that. I get upset at my kids when they do things that I tell 'em not to do; I can't get upset at TMZ for doing what they do," he said with a slight chuckle. "The truth isn't good enough for them, so they gotta twist everything up."
Tunechi also touched on his new LP, I Am Not a Human Being II, which hit stores Tuesday, but that wasn't all: The one-man rap army also commented on MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game VIII" and the fact that he didn't make the top 10 list. "I didn't even check the top 10 list, but I'm glad I didn't make it either," he said, before busting out in laughter. "I probably pissed some people off at MTV or somethin', I dunno."

Mohammed out to punish ABS.

eria

Kano Pillars' striker, Gambo Mohammed has said to supersport.com that it would be difficult for ABS to withstand the pressure they would face on Sunday from the Nigerian champions.
Both sides will go head-to-head in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 5 at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin.
Gambo, who netted a brace against 3SC on Thursday in the NPFL Matchday 4 duel, has now vowed to replicate such feat against the Saraki Boys on Sunday.
“I love to play against ABS because they are young lads, but I want to score against them at their ground.
“We are in a great form of our lives, and I doubt if they (ABS) would be able to get a draw in this game,” the Super Eagles' striker said to supersport.com.
Last season in this similar fixture, it was Thomas Zenke that saved ABS from an embarrassing defeat as his superb goal at the death secured a 2-2 draw for the Saraki Boys.
Kano Pillars currently sit atop the league standings with nine points while ABS occupy 17th position with four points.

SAVE THE CHILDREN!

31 Mar 2013

A300313-save-children.jpg - A300313-save-children.jpg
A docu-drama not only throws the spotlight on child abuse but also poignantly calls for action against the malaise. Ayodeji Rotinwa reports
It is not often that children tell their own stories. To a large extent, it is not even expected that children are capable of strong emotions, something erroneously thought to be the preserve of adults. It is perhaps that as a result of this that the malign circumstances under which many children suffer, for no fault of their own, has gone ignored for a long time. Olunranlowo Mi (My Benefactor) a docu-drama, produced by Haven for the Nigerian Child, a not-for-profit organisation that seeks to provide humanitarian assistance to homeless children, attempts to flip this script.

The docu-drama, played out in Yoruba language, is a re-enacment of the real-life accounts of three children suffering from emotional, physical and sexual abuse on the home front. Unable to stomach it any longer, they run away from home and find solace on a public beach where their lives become intertwined. On this said beach, they fall into bad company and on the precipice of self-destruction. They are then rescued, in the nick of time, from the brink, by a charity for less privileged children.

In the first set of scenes, we are introduced to a mother-and-son family who are simply known as Mama Kunle and Kunle, who have no one but each other. Theirs is a pathetic lot. They are dirt-poor. Mama Kunle cannot even afford her son’s school uniform. For this reason, young Kunle is seen, awake at night, in tears because of this. Later, Mama Kunle is seen going to borrow money from a market woman friend. Apparently, she already owes heavy debts. She is shamed and humiliated by her lender who feels affronted by her perceived audacity to come ask for more loans when she has yet many to reconcile. The lender gets riled up and launches into a tirade of cursing. Unsatisfied, as Mama Kunle is yet to shift ground, (she keeps on begging, regardless) she attacks her, pushing her violently to the floor.
Mama Kunle, finally broken, collapses into wailing, derides her sorry situation. At this point, having a handkerchief handy would be wise. Such is Mama Kunle’s terribly pitiful state. While Mama Kunle is on the receiving end of a gale of verbal and physical abuse, the scene switches to Kunle. He is idly roaming around and runs into a pair of street urchins, with whom he is friendly. He is immediately taken with their “affluence”, which appears to be fairly recent, compared to his impoverished state. He asks them how they get by. They promise to show him and ask that he follows them. He does, leaving his mother’s home for good.

The movie then travels to another home. Their lot is vastly different from Mama Kunle’s and her son’s. They seem to be a close-knit, upper middle class nuclear family (father, mother, son, whose name is Habeeb) with the mother heavily pregnant. Fortunes soon change for the worse, for Habeeb, when his mother dies at childbirth and his father marries another wife. We then see the storied, cliché, wicked stepmother angle play out. Soon, Habeeb’s father also dies. Habeeb is now in clear, shooting range of his stepmother’s hate and abuse. He runs away from home. In a jarring scene, where he sits, carefree on the railing of a bridge, perilously close to a painful end, he contemplates suicide. He changes his mind.

We are then introduced to another character, Funke who seems to be in her early 20s. She also lives poor with her father and brother. Her father is an alcoholic and a hard drugs enthusiast, dealing in anything he can wrap in paper and light a fire to.  Under the heavy influence of these, he rapes his daughter, Funke. This he does, severally in the presence of Funke’s brother. Funke’s brother soon follows his father’s incestuous example. He also rapes Funke when his father is too stoned to do same. Tired of being defiled by her own flesh and blood, Funke, now predictably, also runs away from home.

The three characters’ paths then cross (they become friends) in the sands of Kuramo Beach where they have each made their new home. Here, they get involved in different demeaning acts to keep body and soul together. Funke becomes a prostitute whose body is sold, for a night, by the beach’s resident pimp. When asked by Habeeb why she does this, shrugging she defends herself. She announces her womb has been ruined by her father and brother and might as well employ her nether passageways for more “useful things”. Kunle becomes an amateur arms trafficker working for local bandits. He is later seen attempting to accelerate upwards this career ladder.
He trains to become a bearer of arms, with the purpose of pillaging and plundering. Habeeb, in comparison to the first two, doesn’t fly too far off the rails. He takes to hawking goods on the street. After some time, a charity for displaced children, financed by an anonymous benefactor, visits Kuramo Beach with the aim of changing the sorry state of Kunle, Habeeb, Funke, other children of their ilk and re-uniting them with their parents. They successfully wean them off their lives on the beach. Years later, they are grown and have become persons of standing in the larger society.

Olunranlowo Mi, though an unfortunate everyday reality, we are used to and more damning, have come to accept in Nigeria, is a riveting watch. Its cast is made up mostly of first-time child actors and they gave a fair account of themselves far exceeding the performance of their adult cast members. The message of the docu-drama is simply told and heart-wrenchingly delivered. There are scenes when Habeeb is being beaten and cursed by his stepmother, Funke being raped by her father and Kunle’s mother in anguish over her lost son that will draw tears. Most endearing is the fact the children told of their own predicament, how it made them feel- pain, suffering and anguish et al.

However, in terms of cinematic quality, it falls far short of an acceptable standard. Some scenes are poorly lighted and edited. The movie’s attempt to capture Lagos in the past and the change in the present by shooting the past in a shade of sepia and the present, in full colour, is a let-down. The sound editing also leaves much to be desired.

Overall, the movie’s demerits take nothing away from its strong message. Children must at all times be fiercely protected, more so, homeless children. It doesn’t do to just look upon their plight with pity and a mere shaking of head. That is not enough.
