Man arrested for burying his deformed baby alive

Kids with disabilities are often seen as an embarrassment to the family. One Pakistani man took extreme measures to get rid of his disabled baby.

Mohammed Anwar, was arrested and accused of burying his newborn daughter alive because she was physically deformed.

Anwar is a police officer in the city of Khanewal in the eastern Punjab province, his daughter was born at a hospital in the nearby town of Kacha Khoh.

"After seeing his newborn daughter, Anwar told his relatives that the baby was born dead. He organized a funeral for her. During the funeral service the baby started crying. The presiding cleric told the father to rush the baby girl to the hospital but instead of going to the hospital he buried the baby," Shamshad Khalid, the town's police chief said.

Residents alerted the police after seeing the father take the baby to the graveyard. Police raided the man's house and arrested him on a murder charge.

“She was healthy and alive but she had a fairly large head and abnormal features,” said Mohammed Farooq, the doctor who took care of the baby after she was born.

Police will exhume the child's body and perform an autopsy. The father could be sentenced to death if he's found guilty of killing his daughter.

Fake doctor arrested after woman dies of a bumbum enlargement .

All a woman wanted was a nicer butt, but she died.

A South Florida woman posing as a doctor was arrested and charged in the death of a woman who died after authorities said her butt was pumped with unknown toxic substances during surgery to enlarge her butt.

Shatarka Nuby, a 31-year-old mom, gave a woman known as "Dutchess" hundreds of dollars to come to her home and inject her buttocks, hips, thighs and breasts with an unknown substance. The Dutchess, whose real name is Oneal Morris, sometimes wore scrubs and a stethoscope. She supposedly sealed her with with glue, and cotton balls, according to sheriff's deputies in Broward County.

Nuby told friends that the injections became hard and hot and her skin turned black. She wrote a letter to the Department of Health investigators before her death in Tallahassee. An assistant medical examiner said she suffered "a massive migration of systemic silicone", according to
a sheriff's office.

Authorities said Nuby was one of several victims who were looking towards 32 year old, Morris for cosmetic procedures. Some victims had complications and infections after the injections, including bathroom caulk, cement, Super Glue, Fix-a-Flat and mineral oil into the bodies of her victims, officials said.

Morris was arrested in her mother’s home in South Florida and charged with murder. Her lawyer, Michael Mirer, declined to comment.

Hansel and Gretel was published by the famous German siblings in 1812; but Grimm tales lost favour after the end of the second world war after some academics posited that the often bloody tales had been a catalyst for the acceptance of Nazism.
However, this view has since been questioned and there's a push in Wilhelm and Jacob's homeland to resurrect the stories - popular with Disney and the rest of the world - in German households.

Mali conflict: 'Many die' in Ifoghas mountain battle

Chadian soldiers in Mali. Photo: January 2013
Thirteen Chadian soldiers and 65 Islamist insurgents have been killed in heavy fighting in a remote part of northern Mali, Chad's military says.
It says Friday's clashes occurred in the Ifoghas mountains, where many militants are believed to be hiding.
Last month France led an operation to help oust Islamists who seized the vast northern region of Mali in 2012.
The US military says it has deployed surveillance drones in Niger to gather information on the Islamist militants.
The intelligence collected by a 100-strong contingent of US personnel from across the border is being shared with French troops in Mali, who are assisting thousands of troops from African states.
US drones Islamist rebels are believed to have retreated to the Ifoghas mountains - a desert area in the Kidal region near the border with Algeria - after being forced from northern population centres in recent weeks.
In a statement issued late on Friday, the Chadian army said it had "destroyed five vehicles and killed 65 jihadists", adding that 13 of its soldiers had been killed and another five wounded.
Earlier this month, some 1,800 Chadian soldiers began patrolling the city of Kidal.
Chad has pledged to send 2,000 troops to Mali as part of the African-led mission.
Fighting between Islamist insurgents and Malian troops - backed by French soldiers - also continued in the central city of Gao.
On Thursday, the coalition said it had recaptured the city hall, which had been seized by militants a day earlier.
France intervened in January in its former colony, fearing that al-Qaeda-linked militants who had controlled Mali's north since April 2012 were about to advance on the capital Bamako.
The French have said they are planning to start withdrawing their 4,000 soldiers next month, and would like the African-led contingent to become a UN peacekeeping operation.

NOLLYWOOD: N50m Fraud: RMD Reportedly On The Run From EFCC.

Mr. Mofe Damijo (RMD)
According to what Saharareporters reported on its website, Philo Nkem Ajufo, the acting General Manager of Delta State Tourism Board, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja over her role in a financial scheme.

Ms. Ajufo is reportedly being quizzed for conniving with her boss, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) to embezzle N50 million from the state Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Mr. Mofe Damijo, a well known Nollywood star, is the commissioner in charge of the ministry. Our EFCC said the commissioner was also being sought by the anti-corruption agency, but he has been elusive.

An EFCC source confirmed Ms. Ajufo’s arrest. “As we talk, the Delta State Tourism GM, one Mrs. Nkem Ajufo, is been held in our headquarters here in Abuja over her involvement in the N50 million fraud. Her boss, Mr. Richard Mofe Damijo, is not left out but as we speak he is still avoiding us,” said the source.

Two sources at the ministry told our reporter that the EFCC last week delivered a letter inviting Ms. Ajufo to appear at their headquarters. She was reportedly asked to bring along relevant documents concerning the N50 million that was meant for the purported 2007 Delta Expo event which never held.

The sources disclosed that Mr. Mofe Damijo went underground on learning about the current development.

One source told our reporter that the commissioner, who is reported to be building himself a massive underground edifice in Lagos, was trying to use political contacts in Delta and Abuja to scuttle the EFCC’s investigation and washed his hands off the scam.

SaharaReporters learnt that Mr. Mofe Damijo denied knowledge of the money during the budget defense exercise.

Several calls and sms texts sent to Mr. Damijo and Ms. Ajufo’s mobile lines were not answered. After a while, the commissioner switched off his mobile phone.

Late last year, Saharareporters had broken the news of the N50 million allegedly embezzled by the commissioner and the acting GM of the state’s tourism board.

Several sources in the commissioner’s office had confided that a former commissioner in the Ministry had applied for the N50 million to organize the “Delta State Expo 2007,” disclosing that the state could not release the funds then due to some financial challenges.

However, when the funds were released into the Tourism account in May, 2012, Mr. Mofe Damijo allegedly said that the ministry could no longer carry out the event since it had elapsed by six years and Deltans would have forgotten about the event.

But our reporter obtained “Forms of Advance Warrant” on release of funds from the Ministry of Finance indicating that the N50 million was supposed to be spent on the original event for which it was approved. The warrant order, numbered 00000117, 00000114 and 00000115, was signed by one Ms. P.O. Evuojapha for the Commissioner of Finance.

SaharaReporters learnt that N35 million of the N50 million was supposed to have gone to the tourism board.

A reporter for SaharaReporters learned that Mr. Mofe Damijo issued a check to the tourism board in the name of its acting GM, Ms. Ajufo.

She in turn reportedly deposited the sum into her First Bank private account with account number (3006131619) operated under her name, Nkem Philo Ajufo. Our sources said she and Mr. Mofe Damijo subsequently shared the money.

I Spent $5 Mil on Cocaine

0222-steven-tyler-tmzSteven Tyler says he "snorted half of Peru" over the course of his drug-addled rock career -- easily spending at least $5 million on cocaine before he finally kicked the habit.

The Aerosmith singer revealed the drug numbers on Australia's "60 Minutes" this week, saying he spent a fortune on booger sugar as a young rock star ...  "Probably, realistically, 5 or 6 [million], easy ... You could also say I snorted half of Peru, but, you know, it's what we did."

Tyler's been open about his former drug addiction for a while now -- telling Matt Lauer back in 2011, "I needed that cocaine. I needed it." But he said it ruined him, adding, "It took my children away, it took my marriages away. I was on my knees."

Tyler sobered up in the mid 80s but later relapsed. He was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in 2003, which he believes he contracted as a result of his intravenous drug use.

Tyler's been in and out of rehab numerous times, but now considers himself sober

Beyonce and Jay-Z's 2006 Nigeria Visit Paid For From Poverty Alleviation.

Beyonce and Jay-Z's trip to Nigeria for a music festival was reportedly paid for out of a poverty alleviation fund. Sahara Reports reports that officials in Bayelsa approved around $1 million to be used from the local poverty alleviation funds in order to support the first ThisDay Music Festival in Lagos, which saw the two stars perform.

It is not known how much was paid to the event's performers and all indications are that they were not aware of where the money came from. Beyoncé performed a rendition of the Nigerian national anthem at the festival.

Gunmen Attack Family Compound In Plateau, Kill Ten

The gunmen attacked a family compound where 10 members of the family were killed in cold blood while two others sustained gunshot wounds after which the attackers routed their escape through surrounding environs.
The special task force in a press release signed by Lieutenant Kingsley Egbo confirmed the gruesome murder of the family stating that efforts by the force and police to gain access to the scene with a view to combing the area for possible trace of the attackers were foiled by the locals.
Two members of the family were fortunate to be alive and are receiving treatment at the Vom Christian hospital.
Meanwhile, angry youths continue to protest the incessant killings in the area.
Reports from the community indicates that the family lost a grandmother few days ago and gathered for the preparation of her funeral which informed the large presence of the members in the compound as the assailants attacked in the night after a family meeting.

Justus Esiri… exit of ‘grand good old man of moviedom’

Justus-Esiri-1

HE enjoyed a comfortable listing among the very few professionals in the veteran class who have consistently been winning the hearts of moviegoers with grace and charm. Until he passed on last Tuesday after he reportedly complained of “weakness and pains’’ and was taken to a medical facility in Surulere, Lagos for prompt medical attention, Esiri who is described by younger colleagues (but not to his hearing though) as a ‘grand good old man of the movie’ enjoyed the reputation of being one of the not too many iconoclastic performers on the movie runway who is well regarded as a core professional and one of the very few actors with a strong screen presence.
Indeed, Justus Esiri whether in Nigeria or on the continental acting turf needs no introduction. Awarded the national honours of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2007 by the Federal Government ostensibly for his immense contribution to the development of the motion picture industry, Esiri who would have been 71 in November having been born in November 1942 was undoubtedly one of the most popular faces in the Nigerian movie industry and one of the few actors in the professional class who have had a remarkable career, earned their spurs and who have enjoyed super roles on television and on screen.
From his break on television The Village Headmaster to Forever one of his numerous home video hits and to the more recent Assassin Practice which is currently showing in cinemas across the country, the focused and likeable Germany-trained acting uncle to a number of young actors whose acting career spanned over four decades deservedly enjoys a good rating as an actor. Besides, he was well regarded as a veteran actor and respected as an outstanding thespian of the television, home video and celluloid.
Born in Oria, Abraka in Delta State, Esiri had his early education in Warri. From Warri, Esiri’s thirst for knowledge saw him heading to Germany. He qualified as an Engineer in 1967 at the Professor Weners Institute of Engineering after a stint at the Maximillian University in Munich, Germany. Esiri career swivel chair negotiated a sharp bend in 1968. He detoured into motion picture production and worked as a staff of the Schiller Theatre, Berlin, Germany for nine years. He had earlier trained at the Ahrens School of Performing Arts when it was clear at that time that it was acting or nothing else.
Married and blessed with children, Esiri, father of the dentist-turned singer, Onoriode Esiri a.k.a. Dr. Sid of the Pop Champagne fame returned to Nigeria after that stint at Schiller and his sun set on motherland soon as he did. The authorities found him competent to be part of those to supervise some of the side events of the second World Black Festival of Arts dubbed FESTAC, which Nigeria hosted in 1977. Esiri coordinated creditably the Modern Dress exhibition, which was staged in Lagos as part of FESTAC. That outing earned him some commendations. After that outing, Esiri’s sun shone brightly. He hopped on to the acting turf, worked in between as a news translator and newscaster with the Voice of Nigeria, worked in advertising, before he eventually made up his mind to stick to what has assumed a first love for him, acting.
An actors’ actor of immense credits whose movie and award pouch is filled with plaques and titles of well regarded movies, Esiri star of Dark Soul, Last Desire, Love After Love, Miss Nigeria, Apostates of Hell, Double Affair, The Price, Indecent Desire, Big Heart Treasure and Keep My Will among many others rode into prominence and became something of a constant visitor in many homes on the back of the long rested television soap The Village Headmaster.
As Village Headmaster, the role he lived on the gripping television soap, which ran for so many years on national television, Esiri stood out. The hat wearing acting elder showed depth and he deftly delivered, a reason the name ‘Village Headmaster’ stuck with him.
An old boy of the prestigious Urhobo College, Effurun who though studied Engineering but never practiced for a day, Esiri who is undoubtedly bonded to the arts, hinted that the lot fell on him to interpret the character of the headmaster, who in the soap was the link between education and tradition when others that were auditioned for the role did not measure up to expectation.
After so many trials, someone suggested that he be invited to ‘just try’. What was supposed to be a mere trial soon ended up the real take. He was engaged to play the role and he put an unequalled performance.
“There was a lot of skepticism of my ability to live the character. But as we got along, there was a consensus that I fitted snugly into the role and that was it. But I must add that I found it very challenging and I found the entire programme incredible. It was one incredible drama series. Every one wanted to see it. At that time, people rushed home to watch the soap and it continued like that until it was dropped. And it’s sad that it was dropped because it served as bridge between the citizens and the government. There was so much to learn from the programme. I was reading somewhere about the effort to get it back on air. I am really looking forward to it. We need a programme like that as a growing nation.”
Anytime he is asked to volunteer a word on Nollywood, Esiri who was at a time President of the Conference for Motion Pictures Practitioners of Nigeria (CMPPN), a body now defunct, but which the promoters were hoping would transform into a council for regulation of practice in Nollywood, would describe it as “a gold mine that has not been fully exploited.
Although he acknowledged in his very last interview in the Guardian conducted during the interactive session the Secretary to Government of the Federation Ayim Pius Ayim held with Nollywood on the proposed centenary celebration, that the industry was expanding, Esiri who is always smartly dressed bemoaned the fact that excellence has not been achieved in Nollywood in spite of all the feats it has achieved.
He therefore canvassed a situation where emphasis would be placed on experience, training and skill enhancement as well as acquisition. “We need to improve on all these areas I have mentioned. We must insist that people particularly the young ones, hone their skills. Only then can they succeed in showbiz. There is no two ways to it really. There is no profession that doesn’t demand a reasonable level of training and adherence to ethics so why would anyone want to practice as a film maker without being trained? So, we must insist on training and encourage the establishment of sound training institutions and not the ones that are set up to make money. We must be sure of the facilities on ground and the faculty and we must unite and speak with one voice.
“At the moment, we are speaking with so many voices. We need an umbrella body that will regulate our practice. The Nigerian Film Corporation and others like the Censors Board should be for the development of the industry and implementation of policy decisions as it affects the industry. But there should be a council for the regulation of practice as we have in advertising and allied industries. That was what we set out to achieve with CMPPN, but unfortunately some young people thought we the elders were too over ambitious, they scuttled the plan and went their different ways. Today, everyone calls us to a meeting with government instead of our attending with our representatives on the council. We need the council. We need the film policy to be implemented because it makes provisions for all this structures that will ensure the full exploitation of the gold mine,” he had said.
When Esiri is not working, he says he spends time on the golf course, but that is after attending to other businesses and or family demands.  He said about his family: “I have a wonderfully family that I always want to be with all the time. They are all grown up now but each time I am free, I like to just stay around and call them up and we talk and bond. Of course, you know that my son (Dr. Sid) is into this now and he is doing very well. So proud of him and to know that I didn’t influence his taking to entertainment. I gave them a free hand to be what they wanted to be because I was given that chance too.’’
Till death, Esiri had nostalgic feeling for some of his earlier screen runs particularly The Village Headmaster but he would not consider any of the over one hundred movies he starred in, challenging. “To say one particular one was challenging would be like saying that you love a child over the other. May be works that are memorable, but as a rule, I don’t take up roles that do not task me.”
A warm natured person to be with and a strong advocate for professionalism, what can pass as a well deserved icing on Esiri’s career cake came when in 2007 the Federal Government named him alongside another equally illustrious thespian, Chief Adebayo Faleti as recipients of the national honour of the Order of the Officer of the Niger (OON). The recipient of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) crest for acting in 2006 had this to say on the award which he said came to him as a surprise. “I thank the government for the recognition. I wept for joy the day it was announced. What a way to be recognized and appreciated. I thank the Government for the recognition. I can’t express my gratitude enough.”

Nigeria: Victims of Zaki Biam Attack Demand Payment of N41.8 Billion

Abuja — Victims of soldiers invasion of Zaki-Ibiam in Benue State have demanded from the Presidency, immediate payment of N41.8 billion special and general damages compensation awarded them six years ago by a Federal High Court over the mass killing of their people.
The huge sum was awarded to the Tiv people, who in 2001 were invaded by armed soldiers in Logo, Ukum, Kwande and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas of the state where over 2,000 citizens were reportedly massacred.
The N41.8 billion was awarded against the Federal Government as damages for arbitrary deployment of armed soldiers against armless citizens who were either brutally killed or inflicted with permanent injuries.
In a strongly-worded letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, the victims asked him to respect the rule of law by ordering the payment of the judgment debt without any further delay.
In the letter dated February 20, and signed by their counsel, Chief Sebastine Hon (SAN), the victims recalled that the N41.8 billion was awarded to them by Justice Lewis Alagoa in 2007 in his judgment in their suits where they demanded payment of about N200 billion for the state assault against them.
The victims recalled that the Federal Government had initially appealed to the Court of Appeal, but later through its team of lawyers applied to settle the matter out of court in order to heal the wounds inflicted on them.
They, however, expressed regret that six years after the out-of-court settlement proposal, the Federal Government has not made any tangible move to meet its own part of the settlement agreement.

Nigeria: Gunmen in Military Uniform Kill 10 Mourners in Plateau

No fewer than 10 people, believed to be members of a family, were Thursday night killed by gunmen in Kogom Village of Vwang District, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, residents have said.
The Police Public Relation Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, John Onuigbo, confirmed the killings but said the police could not ascertain the casualty figure.
He said the police are investigating the attack, although no arrest has been made so far.
A survivor of the incident, Habila Musa, said that the attackers were dressed in military uniforms, a claim that has been raised in previous killings.
"The attackers were putting on army uniforms, some were with military helmet," he said.
Mr. Habila told PREMIUM TIMES that residents of the area made repeated phone calls to the recently introduced emergency mobile phone numbers released by the Special Task Force, STF, in Plateau. He said the operation lasted for about an hour, but no one came to their aide.
"No one came to rescue us," he said.
Members of the victims' families also condemned the killings saying most of the victims were mourners who came to condole with a family who lost their grandmother some days back.
They said most of the victims died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.
"They invaded our area at about 9:00 p.m. last night, heavily armed and opened fire on the mourners," one of the wailing family member said.
Reacting on the killings, the Special Adviser to Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau on Media and Publicity, Ayuba Pam, who hails from the area, described the incident as "barbaric."
He stressed that the government will not rest in the search for lasting peace in the state, until attacks on citizens are brought to a halt.
"At about 8 p.m., I received a called from the state security outfit informing that there was an attacked in a Kogom Village that four people were killed.
"Later another figure came in that 10 people were killed including children, and that was what happened," he said.
On his part, the head of Vwang District, Choji Balack, while sympathizing with families of the deceased condemned the attack.
He blamed the attack on men of the STF in the state and demanded their withdrawal from Plateau. Mr. Balack claimed that the Fulani could not "carry out such shooting."
Plateau has witnessed the killing of hundreds of people including a serving senator in what is a largely inter-ethnic clash, mainly between the Birom and the Fulani.
The STF is an inter-agency force composed of soldiers, police officers, and State Security Service officials; it was set up by the Federal Government to maintain peace in Plateau but as been accused of also contributing to the violence and killings.
Even in death, goldie stirs controversy
The news of the passing last Thursday of controversially flamboyant Nigerian singer Goldie Harvey, that petite blonde babe who featured in the M-Net reality show Big Brother StarGame last year, tore across Africa like a tsunami.
The “Nigerian Lady Gaga”, as she was referred to outside her homeland, who passed on a few hours after touching down from attending the Grammy Awards in the US, is said to have complained of a severe headache upon arrival at her home in upscale Lagos, quickly passing on minutes later as they attempted to get her to hospital.
Cause of death – a pulmonary embolism, which is a blockage of the main artery of the lung by a substance that has travelled from elsewhere in the body.
That, especially since one of its causes is drug abuse, cascaded into a whole debate on the wires, with conspiracy theorists claiming she probably abused drugs, which is inevitable where an entertainer as lurid as Goldie suddenly kicks their bucket.
Unfortunately though, along with the rather dismissible claim has emerged a string of hair-raising details about her private life – details that have diverted people from mourning her just to gape at what an enigma she was.

Married and secretive about it
The first big controversy that emerged just two days after her passing was that the Nigerian Lady Gaga was actually a married woman, and one not really out of touch with her husband. Yet, not even the Nigerian media had ever known about those secret chambers of their Lady Gaga’s life, and were as shocked to learn of the details as the Nigerian masses they gave the information to.
Upon her demise, all the sympathies were directed at the equally-controversial Kenyan rapper CMB Prezzo, with whom she had impressed upon us an on-and-off relationship, starting inside the Big Brother StarGame house and extending beyond the reality TV show.
You might remember that following their Big Brother stint, the duo was last year spotted together in different parts of the world, even visiting each other’s respective countries and telling the media that the possibility of  marriage could not be ruled out – at least that is what they told us from their hotel room at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala when they first sneaked into the country late last year on a song project with Navio, looking lovey-dovey as they come.
In fact, immediately the news of her death came through, Prezzo came out to announce that he would jump onto the next flight to Lagos to mourn with Goldie’s family.
Hark! Just about the same time, a seemingly middle-aged British called Andrew Harvey came out to announce himself the legal husband of the deceased.
Harvey went on to warn Prezzo not to get anywhere near Goldie’s family, but rather to “let us mourn in peace.” If at all the middle-aged Briton looked a poser (which in all honesty he initially did), his posting of pictures of himself and Goldie in earlier days cast away all doubt about his claims.
Among the pictures, he posted those of their wedding day in the UK, those of himself and Goldie in earlier times, and even those he and Goldie took just last Christmas, when the singer visited and spent part of the Christmas season with Harvey in Malaysia.
Information dug up by Nigerian media upon Harvey’s emergence indicates Goldie married the Briton in 2006 before she rose to stardom, getting from him the money that fuelled her rise, and there are even suspicions she has left behind a kid with him.
Also, Nigerian media hold that Prezzo’s extension of involvement with the singer beyond the Big Brother house might have caused a rift between the deceased and her British husband.
Apparently, Harvey knowingly let Goldie do whatever she did in the Big Brother house just for the sake of the show, but that it would not continue outside Big Brother. Which sounds plausible because following up shortly after Harvey came out was a video from an unidentified source of Goldie and the Briton serenading each other in some sort of romantic game, last year – the video clearly designed to announce Goldie’s entry into Big Brother, as it ended with the pair telling Africa to watch out for her on Big Brother (whatever happened for it not to come out earlier?)

Alleged former best friend gives new twist
While everyone’s mouth was still ajar at the dumbfounding revelations, a one Ifeanyi Harvey came up with another mahusive twist. Ifeanyi, a Nigerian immigrant to the UK, came out to inform Nigerian media that Goldie was actually her former best-friend, albeit one who wound up morphing into the greatest misfortune she ever knew in her life by leading to the collapse of her marriage and family.
Ifeanyi revealed that Harvey was initially her husband, just that Goldie snatched him from her and ran off with him to a clandestine marriage in Nigeria.
She added that the deceased singer, who by the time of her death was believed to be one of the richest women in Nigeria, financially ruined the Briton by taking all his money to build her music career, and then somehow abandoning him and restricting him to occasional appearances in her life.
Ifeanyi claims the Briton has even spent a spell now living a low life afflicted with poor health in Maylasia, and that before her trip to the US to attend the Grammy’s, Goldie even paid the ailing man a visit in Malaysia.
Among the revelations include some petty ones too – that she used bleaching creams to lighten up her complexion to what we knew of her – and there are old pictures of her and Harvey, showing a quite dark-skinned Nigerian belle.

Biography

Goldie was born Susan Olubiwampe Filani in Lagos, in October, 1983, the first of four children of highly educated and successful  parents – high-ranking officials in a bank that was gaining ground in Nigeria.
As a result of her parentage, she was directed towards academics from an early age. But the family also being very religious, she discovered music at an early age singing in church choirs.
The death of her mum at 10 in 1994 was a major turning point, as the singer is on record having said her mother was the only friend she had during childhood.
She then grew up with her father, who she said tried to avert her from the creative arts, often attempting to stop her from drawing and singing, stuff she was so fond of.
After high school in Nigeria at the turn of the millennium, she moved to the UK for further studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2006. It was in the UK that she fully began recording, going professional upon her return to Nigeria in 2006.
She hit the limelight in Nigeria around 2008 and won several awards locally, but only became renowned across Africa after her involvement in Big Brother StarGame last year. She passed on on Valentine’s Day at a time when she was becoming a real global brand, with hits like Don’t Touch My Body and Jawo featuring Jaywon.
Last year, she recorded a song called Miliki with Uganda’s Navio, and it is expected to hit big considering its video, which came out just a few weeks ago. Apparently, she had also landed some recording deals in the US on her trip to catch the Grammys, but she did not live to see the deals materialise.
By press time, burial arrangements had not yet been concluded.

Nigeria gun, machete attack kills 10, including 5 children

Attackers in Nigeria, including some wearing military uniforms, have killed 10 members of the same family, with half the victims under the age of six, the military and an official said Friday.
Central Plateau state, where the attack occurred late Thursday, has seen waves of violence that has killed thousands in recent years, in part due to tension between mostly Muslim herdsmen and a mainly Christian ethnic group.
"A family of 10 were ... murdered," said Pam Ayuba, the governor's spokesman. "Five little children including a two-month-old child were slaughtered."
Ayuba said he visited the family's compound after the attack and spoke to several witnesses who described the massacre as being carried out by Muslim Fulani herdsmen armed with guns and machetes.
Several eye witnesses said the assailants were dressed as soldiers, according to Ayuba.
The military spokesman in Plateau, Lt. Kingsley Amos, provided the same details, but assured that no soldiers were involved in the attack.
"Somehow, some hoodlums and criminals gained access to our old uniforms...but I can assure that none of our people were involved," he told AFP.
Members of the mostly Christian Berom ethnic group, who consider themselves the state's indigenes, have previously accused the military of perpetrating violence on behalf of the Fulani.
Egbo said soldiers who tried to access the village after the attack "were met with stiff resistance by the locals," citing past allegations against the military as the potential cause.
Plateau lies on Nigeria's so-called Middle Belt, where the mainly Christian south meets the predominately Muslim north in Africa's most populous country and top oil producer.
Berom leaders have accused the Fulani of trying to appropriate wide swathes of land from what they claim are the state's original settlers.
Fulani leaders as well as Hausas, who are also mostly Muslim, counter that the state's primarily Christian political leaders have deprived them of basic rights.
The victims of the latest violence were from a Christian Berom family, the military and Ayuba said.
Extremist Islamist group Boko Haram, which has waged a deadly insurgency in north and central Nigeria that has killed hundreds since 2009, has been blamed for past violence in the state.
But most of the unrest is thought to be fuelled by the still-bitter grievances between the Berom and the Fulani.
A number of peace initiatives have been launched in recent years to pacify the state, which has seen intense violence interspersed with periods of relative calm.
A recent flare up occurred in July when a weekend of unrest blamed on Fulani gunmen left an estimated 100 people dead.
One of the attacks occurred at a graveside as residents attempted to bury those killed on the previous day.

Bieber rips Carney: It's on between Black Keys and the Biebs

Bieber rips Carney
Justin Bieber's getting a bit feisty in his old age, ripping Patrick Carney on Tuesday after the Black Keys drummer told photogs Sunday night that the Biebs didn't deserve a Grammy.
"Grammys are for, like, music, not for money ... and he's making a lot of money," Carney told TMZ after being asked how he felt about Bieber's Grammy-nomination snub. "He should be happy."
That didn't exactly make the younger musician happy.
"the black keys drummer should be slapped around haha," Bieber tweeted Tuesday.
As of mid-afternoon, his wish had been retweeted by fans more than 36,000 times.
Bieber's had a lot to make him cranky on Grammy Sunday, when he tried to live-stream online counterprogramming of himself against the awards show, only to be thwarted by a blast of Bieber Fever shutting down the streaming service twice.
"since nothing is working and im super upset i feel i gotta make it up to u. i should post a new song on twitter so you can still be excited," he wrote.
Instead, a shirtless Bieber posted an apology video that included a snippet of some of his new music -- and a visit from his little brother and sister.
No word on any apology to the Black Keys.

Radio journalists in Nigeria accused of spurring slayings

Clinic where polio workers were killed
Two radio journalists have reportedly been charged in northern Nigeria on suspicion of airing a broadcast that incited the slayings of women vaccinating people against polio. The case centers on a program aired days before the shootings last week.
Police said at least nine immunization workers were killed by gunmen Friday in the northern city of Kano, where suspicion toward vaccines has thwarted the campaign against polio. It is still unclear who was behind the attacks; no arrests have been reported.
After the shootings, Nigerian media reported, three journalists from the Wazobia FM station were detained: a reporter, a radio presenter and the  head of programming.
The programming chief was released shortly afterward; the others were charged Tuesday in court along with a hard-line Muslim cleric who was featured in their report, Agence France-Presse reported. The men have denied the charges.
Kano state's police commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, initially told the Associated Press that the men would face charges of “culpable homicide,” which is punishable by death, after the airing of a report about the immunization campaign. However, the AP later reported that the men were ultimately charged with lesser offenses, including conspiracy and “inciting a disturbance.”
The contents of the broadcast were not immediately clear. Nigerian news outlets and AFP reported that Wazobia had aired allegations that local officials had forced cleric Abubakar Rabo to let his children be immunized. Some reports said the broadcast also discussed local fears about the polio vaccine.
Station chief Sanusi Bello Kankarofi told the Daily Trust newspaper that “the accusations are mere conjectures meant to humiliate the journalists for political reasons,” the paper reported Tuesday.
A phone call to the Wazobia regional office in Kano was answered by a man who said the station would not comment until it understood the full charges. He refused to give his name or role at the station.
The charges troubled the Committee to Protect Journalists, which said Nigeria and other governments in the region have often stretched the definition of “incitement” to punish criticism in the media. It was still gathering information Tuesday about what the Wazobia journalists said on the air.
“The red line would be if the station actually directed the population to attack these polio clinics or take action against the health workers,” said Mohamed Keita, Africa advocacy coordinator for the New York-based group. Charging the journalists for “anything short of that is intimidation and an attempt to silence a critical voice.”
Stamping out polio has been a touchy topic in Nigeria. Conservative Muslim clerics urged families to steer clear of the vaccine a decade ago, insisting it was a Western plot to sterilize Muslim girls. Though imams later dropped the boycott, such suspicions have persisted in northern Nigeria.
Nigeria suffered more cases of the crippling disease than any other country last year, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, and is one of only three nations where the disease is still endemic. The two other countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, have also suffered violent attacks against immunization workers.
“Such attacks severely limit health workers’ access to the populations who need them most and could have devastating effects in the fight to improve the health of people everywhere,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement Monday, condemning the Friday attack and the later reported killings of three doctors elsewhere in Nigeria.
Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, the Friday shootings are widely suspected to be the work of Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group that has terrorized Nigeria with assassinations and attacks on schools, churches and mosques.

N-Korea has tested most powerful nuclear warhead yet: S-Korea

AP

AP
An international nuclear test monitoring agency said that it had detected an “unusual seismic event” in North Korea, following weeks of speculation that a nuclear test was imminent in the country. Reuters has reported a UNSC diplomat confirming that the quake was a result of a nuclear test in North Korea.
Kim Min-seok, a South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman, also told reporters that North Korea informed China and the United States of its plans to conduct a nuclear test. It was not clear when Pyongyang told Beijing and Washington.
These are the latest developments and reactions:
  • North Korea has tested most powerful nuclear warhead yet: South Korea

North Korea is believed to have detonated a nuclear device with a yield of 6-7 kilotons, which is more powerful than bombs used in previous atomic tests, Seoul's defense ministry said Tuesday.

Earlier the USGS upgraded the magnitude of the nuclear tremor in North Korea from 4.9 to 5.1. South Korean, U.S. and Japanese seismic monitoring agencies put the magnitude of Tuesday's quake between 4.9 and 5.2.

Chi Heoncheol, an earthquake specialist quoted by the Associated Press, said a magnitude 3.9 magnitude earthquake and a magnitude 4.5 earthquake were detected in the North's 2006 and 2009 underground nuclear tests.

  • Obama promises 'firm action' to North Korea's 'provocative' nuclear test

Full text of US President Barack Obama's statement in response to North Korea's nuclear test:

North Korea announced today that it conducted a third nuclear test. This is a highly provocative act that, following its December 12 ballistic missile launch, undermines regional stability, violates North Korea’s obligations under numerous United Nations Security Council resolutions, contravenes its commitments under the September 19, 2005 Joint Statement of the Six-Party Talks, and increases the risk of proliferation. North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs constitute a threat to US national security and to international peace and security. The United States remains vigilant in the face of North Korean provocations and steadfast in our defense commitments to allies in the region.

These provocations do not make North Korea more secure. Far from achieving its stated goal of becoming a strong and prosperous nation, North Korea has instead increasingly isolated and impoverished its people through its ill-advised pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.

The danger posed by North Korea’s threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies. We will strengthen close coordination with allies and partners and work with our Six-Party partners, the United Nations Security Council, and other UN member states to pursue firm action.

  • Why this nuclear test could test China's patience as well

North Korea’s nuclear test could bring China’s growing frustration with Pyongyang to a head, reports the Associated Press.

Beijing signaled its unhappiness earlier by agreeing to tightened UN sanctions after North Korea launched a rocket in December, surprising China watchers with its unusually tough line, which prompted harsh criticism from Pyongyang.

And while China isn’t expected to abandon its communist neighbor, it appears to be reassessing ties a year after new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took office. The question is for how long China, itself under new leader Xi Jinping, will continue to back North Korea’s nettlesomepolicies.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The monster that got away from United.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson. Getty

In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo scored 42 goals to help Manchester United to the Champions League and Premier League double. It was a performance that earned him the Ballon D’Or and he was comfortably the best player in the Premier League. In the eyes of coach Alex Ferguson though, he wasn’t quite the finished article.
Even then — he had it all. Pace, the desire to score, the ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. But his performances at Real Madrid have raised the bar so high that Ferguson now believes that the Portuguese skipper is a complete player.

In January 2013, Ferguson told Inside United: “Maturity brings many things. When I went to see them play against City, some of his decision-making in terms of passing was brilliant. One-touch passing, good crosses.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson. Getty
“In the six years we had him, you just saw his game grow all the time, and he was a fantastic player. Now you see the complete player. His decision-making, his maturity, his experience, plus all the great skills he has got, they all make him the complete player.”
And what has that complete player done to his opponents? A quick analysis of his performances at Real Madrid vis-a-vis his time at Manchester United indicate that his growth hasn’t stopped at all.
In 287 appearances for Manchester United, Ronaldo scored 116 goals and had 60 assists. In just 179 matches for Real Madrid, Ronaldo has scored 182 goals and has 54 assists. It is a strike-rate that is downright scary.
Some might say that a lot of his goals have come against weak opposition in the La Liga. But then he hasn’t done too badly in the Champions League, which features the best teams from across Europe.
In 52 Champions League games for United, he scored 15 goals. He has almost managed to double that number for Madrid — 29 goals in just 34 games.
If you stick to just league numbers, in 196 games for United, he got 84 goals and had 47 assists. For Madrid, he is averaging more than a goal a game — 136 goals from 123 games, with 42 assists.
Whichever way you look at it — the numbers are scary. But what makes him so good?
According to Gary Neville, the former Manchester United defender, his ability to zero in on the weak links in the defence and pray on their frailties makes him very dangerous.
“Ronaldo is a bully. He bullies the weakest defender. He does it all the time,” Neville told The Sun. “He did it to Manchester City against Maicon. He will play on the left wing.
“If he can’t get on the ball he will play centre-forward, midfield, right wing.”
It makes him a difficult man to mark. He is probably one of the few players in the world who has the freedom to roam all over the pitch and it means he can also draw others players out of formation and create gaps where there were none.
It is a gamble every team has to take. Do they let him roam free or do they try and shackle him? Either which way, there are risks involved. Messi has a great record as well but you don’t expect him to suddenly unleash a shot from 30 yards out — with Ronaldo you are never sure. He can score from open play, from free kicks and the outrageous is never beyond him.
Surely, there are days when Ferguson thinks about Ronaldo and wonders about how he let this monster get away. As good as Robin Van Persie, as clinical as he is… he is no Ronaldo.
So try as United might, on Wednesday, Ronaldo will create chances… plenty of them and somehow they will hope that he’ll miss most of them. This will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s first encounter against his old side since leaving for a world record £80million in the summer of 2009 — and he may have his flaws but he sure knows how to pick his moments to shine.
And in that moment, expect him to look at Rooney and wink because that’s who he is.

Child kidnappers sell boys for N450,000, girls N150,000

UNIDENTIFIED persons, weekend, kidnapped a three-year-old boy, Ejike Emmanuel, at Akaeze in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.

Vanguard gathered that the boy was abducted in front of his parent’s compound at Obulo-Iyioji village in Akaeze by two suspected kidnappers, a man and woman, who disguised as customers to the mother of the victim, Mrs Nnennaya Emmanuel.

Narrating her ordeal, Mrs Emmanuel said: “I was closing my akara(bean cake) business for the day and dropped Ejike with his four-year-old sister, Nkiruka, and crossed over to the other side of the road to keep the bench I used for the business.

“When I came back, my son was nowhere to be found. I only saw Nkiruka crying and pointing her finger at some people on a motorcycle.”

In his account, the father, Mr Anyim Emmanuel, expressed disbelief that his child could ever be kidnapped on such an ever busy road and called on security agencies to help secure the release of his son.

It was, however, learnt that the parents of the victim raised alarm which attracted some villagers who quickly organised a search party to locate the boy’s whereabouts but all efforts proved abortive as the kidnappers had disappeared.

Police rescue two kidnapped children

In a related development, two of the eight children kidnapped between December last year and early January at Ishiagu in the same local government have been found.

Police sources noted that the two children were rescued in Owerri, ImoState, with the aid of members of the Criminal Investigation Department of Imo State Police Command, adding that they were found in the custody of a woman who allegedly bought them from the kidnappers for N600, 000.

According to the source, the woman, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was said to have paid N450,000 for the male child, while the female child was sold to her for N150,000.

Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officers, DSP Sylvester Igbo, who confirmed both incidents, said he was waiting for a formal report from the Divisional Police Officers in charge of the Ivo LGA before briefing journalists.

He, however, said the Police had arrested a suspect (names withheld) in connection with the kidnap of little Ejike Emmanuel, stressing that the Police was determined to rid the state of kidnappers.

Nollywood actress sent to prison after 100 master keys are found in her possession

yetunde

Nollywood actress,Yetunde Akilapa, was on Thursday sent to Kirikiri Prison, Apapa, Lagos for allegedly being in possession of 100 master keys.
Miss Akilapa was on Wednesday detained at the Alade Divisional Police headquarters in Somolu, Lagos following a complaint lodged by a complainant, accusing the actress of stealing the 100 master keys found on her.
According to a statement written by her at the police headquarters, it was not the first time the suspect would be accused of stealing.
She said: “There was a day she came home to see my relative and when I opened her bag after she went to the toilet I found a phone that was later found to have been stolen. We seized the phone from her and returned it to the owner despite her denying that she did not steal the phone.”
When the case came up at the Magistrate’s Court in Somolu on Thursday, the police prosecutor, Inspector Anyanwu, told the court that Miss Akilapa was arrested by a mob that accused her of conspiracy and stealing of bunches of keys.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, is punishable under section 383, 516 and 517 criminal code of Lagos state.
In her response to the charge during the court session, the accused, who claimed to be trained by popular actor Abbey Lanre, said: “I have featured in about five films including Aiyelaba.
“I produced Bunmi Akata which I use a bunch of 100 keys to act. I am also a makeup artist.
“On the day I was arrested, a woman named Mama Ayoola, called me and said that I should bring weaveon for her. I did not know Mama Ayoola was not living at that compound. When I got there, I asked a girl about Mama Ayoola and she directed me to knock on the next door.
“ An Igbo man peeped from the door and said Mama Ayo was not living there. And as I was about going out, the mob pounced on me, searched my bags and found the hundred keys with the weaveon. They later handed me over to the policemen at Alade Divisional headquarters.”
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the magistrate, Justice Mrs. E.A. Adekomaya, granted her bail in the sum of N14,000 with two sureties who must own a landed property in Lagos, with evidence of paying tax to Lagos state government.
The case was adjourned till 12 March, 2013, while the defendant was moved to Kirikiri prison in Apapa, Lagos pending when she could perfect her bail conditions

Adele lays into Chris Brown at Grammy Awards.

Adele
COUNTLESS people have wanted to give Chris Brown a piece of their mind. But it took a ballsy British balladeer to do it.
Adele gave Chris Brown a tongue lashing at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards.
Adele cornered the R&B singer moments after he snubbed singer songwriter Frank Ocean by sitting through a standing ovation for his rival.
Ocean and Brown were both nominated for Best Urban Contemporary Album Award.

When Ocean's name was announced as the winner, the audience rose to applaud him. Brown applauded but stayed in his seat as the first-time Grammy winner made his way to the stage.
Adele’s seat was across the aisle, just metres from Brown and cameras caught her glaring at him and shaking her head.
Then she cornered him and was seen exchanging tense words with him.
The conversation was not audible, but Brown’s body language looked uncomfortable.
He held his arms out as the 24-year-old new mum gave him a piece of her mind.
Last month Brown, 23, and Ocean, 25, got into a fight outside a Los Angeles recording studio.
Neither pressed charges but Brown is still on probation for assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009.
The controversial couple attended the Grammys together and sat next to each other in the front row.
