Association condemns killing of 9 women on immunisation duty in Kano

Gombe - The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Gombe State chapter, on Saturday condemned the killing of nine women on polio immunisation duty in Kano on Friday.

Dr Jauro Degri, the Chairman of the association made this known while briefing newsmen in Gombe.

He described the development as unfortunate considering the efforts made by various stakeholders in the country to eradicate the polio disease.

The chairman said that such attacks were capable of undermining the efforts by stakeholders toward the eradication of polio in the country.

"It is very unfortunate that when governments at all levels and other stakeholders are calling for the total eradication of the polio disease, some people will engage in such acts.

"The incident is a serious setback on governments to deliver healthcare to the people.

"Those who have the intention in mind should desist from it,” he said.

Degri called for more measures aimed at protecting health workers and those involved in delivering healthcare services in the country.

He also urged Nigerians to support the National Health Bill, currently at the National Assembly saying, when passed it would go a long way in improving healthcare delivery to Nigerians.

The chairman said that NMA had mobilised stakeholders in Gombe State to attend the Senate public hearing on the bill scheduled for Feb. 11, at the National Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill seeks to provide responsibility for health and eligibility for health services and establishment of national health System.

It also seeks to provide health establishments, technologies, human resources for health, national health research and information, among others.
